Rodger to Carry the Olympic Torch!

It has been announced that the Club Founder and Life President of Prestwich AC, Rodger Davies, is to carry the Olympic Torch in the 2012 Relay next year. The honour is in recognition of Rodger's efforts in setting up the club and keeping it going over 25 years, and in particular for his leading role in raising over £50,000 for charity through the Prestwich Challenge and other events over that time.
Everyone in the club is immensely proud of Rodger, and we all look forward to seeing him carrying the torch towards Manchester
The story appeared in the Manchester Evening News this week - click here to see the article.

Championship Race 10 - 6 PBs in Lancaster as Dave and Alison secure top spots

The Lancaster Half Marathon provided the final race of Prestwich AC's first Championship. In beautiful winter sunshine by the Crook o' Lune 6 Prestwich runners took part, and incredibly all 6 finished with new PBs. Andy Mudd led the Prestwich runners home in 1:37:11, followed by Dave Bradshaw in 1:39:02 and Jon Channell in 1:40:15. Alison Allerton was next in 1:43:08, with Clare Elam finishing in 1:50:16 and Ann Dunn in 2:07:01.
Dave's 18 points for second place were enough to seal the Championship, with Alison taking the prize for top female.

Race Report - Liverpool and Chester Marathons

Sunday 9th October saw 4 Prestwich AC Runners competing in their first marathons. Jon, Paul and Richard took on the Liverpool Marathon (pictured at the start in Birkenhead), while Dave set out to cover the same distance in Chester.
Jon was first to finish in Liverpool in a time of 3:51:56, Richard followed in 4:11:04, and Paul battled calf problems and a cold to finish in 4:49:48. Over in Chester, Dave also battled with calf pain and cramp to finish in 4:04:30.

Race Report - Macclesfield Half Marathon

Andy and Dave both ran the Macclesfield Half Marathon on September 25th and both came home with great times from a tough, hilly race. Dave describes the race:
Perfect weather conditions for this race. Very well organised with 776 competitors. Quite a hilly course but the hills were well spaced out. Lots of spectators giving you encoragement, all together a great race atmosphere. Andy and i paced each other for the first 11 miles, constantly telling each other to slow down. At the last water station the fast pace we had kept up was beginning to make me tire. Andy was still running strong at this point and soon dissapeared into the distance. Andy crossed the finishing line in a great time of 1:40:11 and took 172nd position. I finished just ahead of Geraldine an old friend from Pennine Fell Runners, in 189th position in a time of 1:41:26. At the end of the race i discover that Geraldine is running the Chester Marathon and we have plans to pace each other round the course.

Championship Race 9 - Boggarts Chased by Dave
Sunday 18th September saw Dave, Jon and Andy compete in the penultimate Championship Race for this year - the Boggart Chase 10k. Consisting of a looping course around Boggart Clough Park, the race attracted around 200 competitors. Despite the hills - and the distractions of marathon training - Dave led the Prestwich AC runners home in a very commendable 46:04. Andy followed in 46:41, with Jon finishing in 48:00.
Despite Jon taking 10 bonus points with a PB 1:42:48 at the Isle of Axholme Half Marathon a week earlier, Dave now leads the Championship by 3 points. "Marathon Weekend" in Chester and Liverpool will see several Prestwich AC runners completing 26 miles on October 9th, before the final Championship race of the season in Lancaster.
30th August
Championship Race 8 - Dave leads in Leek

Dave Bradshaw and Jon Channell were Prestwich AC's representatives at the Leek Half Marathon on 21st August.
Although we were expecting rain, it turned out to be a warm morning, although there was enough cloud around to stop the temperatures rising too far. On leaving Leek, the course quickly hit some sharp hills. Looking ahead, there was beautiful countryside, and some scenic rock formations on the hills. At least we wouldn't need to climb those....
...we were wrong of course, and soon found ourselves looking down on the Staffordshire countryside from on high, before the second half of the race which was thankfully mainly downhill.
As for the race, Dave led Jon for the first 11 miles before foot pain caused him to slow and allow Jon past. Unfortunately (for Jon) that didn't last, and Dave found a second wind to breeze past, and take the 20 points in a time of 1:50:43, exactly a minute ahead of Jon.
Elsewhere, Alison took 5 points from the Park Run on 20th August to take the lead in the Ladies' Championship.

Championship Race 7 - Dave goes top and Rodger makes his mark
There have been big changes to the club Championship Table this week. New Men's Championship Leader describes the 2 races involving Prestwich AC Runners last week:
Radcliffe Trail Race
Andy Mudd and I set off for this race in a down pour, both thinking we were mad for braving such attrocious conditions. At registration it was great to see Alison in her club vest. With 10 minutes to go before the start Rodger appeared and after a sprint to the start line joined us. Only a small field :- 56 Runners. The sun came out and we were off.
Andy was first home in an excellent time of 37:35 and finished in 27th position.Collecting 20 Championship points.
I was second only just as Alison was breathing down my neck. We finished as follows:-
Dave 40:09 in 32nd position 18 Points and Alison who was 5th lady 40:14 33rd position collecting 16 Points.
Rodger did himself proud finishing in 58:31. Collecting 14 Points.
Royton Trail Race

A cracking little race 5.5 miles long.Great scenery in Tandle Hill Country. Perfect weather and a very tough course. 189 Runners took part and once again Andy was in fine form finishing in 82nd position in a time of 40:40. I was stuggling again and finished in 44:21 in 119th position. Andy collects 10 bonus points and I 8 bonus points. A pre race photo is attached. Would reccomend this race for next years Championship. The Tandle Hill Tavern gave a great post race atmosphere providing free food for all runners.
